Something I don't understand

why doesn't badminton get more coverage on the olympics. some things to consider.

1) Most people have actually played badminton at some point in their lives, whether at a backyard BBQ or gym class. (Can't say that about synchronized swimming.)

2) Fast paced action. (can't say that about cycling or distance running)

3) People actually can understand the rules. (Can't say that about gymastics or international basketball)

4) People can actually understand the scoring system. (Can't say that about gymnastics or diving)

5) The entire sport revolved around a cock.

6) Lots of androgenous looking asian athletes. You can play a game of "He or She" while watching.

All in all a jolly good time.

graham elliot is still my hero

wifey and i ate at Graham Elliot this weekend. a few thoughts.

- Service was outstanding and without pretense. The crowd was very different than Avenues, much younger and more familes as well which we really enjoyed.

- Loved the decor as well; nice open space with well spaced tables

On to the food. Overall, everything was at least good and the small dishes in general were a bit better than the large ones. When we go back,

The Standouts--

- Gnocchi-- best I have ever had (and I order it alot); pearl onions and cheese helped make the dish with perfectly cooked potatoes.

- Rissotto-- best in class as well; rice cooked perfectly and the bacon gives good flavor without overpowering the dish

Very, Very Good:

- Buffalo chicken with beer foam: great inventive twist on wings. Chicken perfectly done in the middle with a spicy sauce that doesn't overpower. The blue cheese with celery pieces was a good touch.

- Mahi Mahi: very good as well with pineapple salsa and bok choy cooked perfectly. Presentation on this and all of the other main dishes needed some work IMHO. Everything stacked together isn't a good approach when you have such good distinct flavors.

- Pork chop: As mentioned before; huge portion with very good flavor.

- the truffle popcorn: GE could make a fortune by bagging and selling this. truly addicting. we probably filled up a bit too much on this

- The Caesar Salad. The brioche got changed up a bit on this version of Avenues BLT dish. GE, please bring the old dish back

over the past 10 years, there has been an exponential growth in the quality and availability of entertainment technology. The pentration of plasma screens with the clearest picture ever is approaching it limit. However, at the same time, other technology is growing as well and consequently, multi-tasking.

Ironically, we now have the clearest picture ever, yet people are paying less attention to it. As I write this, I am watching Dateline NBC and IMing wifey who just on the other floor. In practical terms, this trend illustrates the importance of audio in today's television. With even less attention paid to the picture, advertisers must have breakthrough audio to get through to consumers.

1) when did waiter/waitresses stop brining you your food? now it also also seems like it is a busboy or runner of some sort. As a result, if there is a mistake of some sort, then person in front of you in unable to deal with it. I know Henry Ford would be proud of this specialization but breaking the role of server into "order taking specialist" and "food delivery specialist". However, at some point, you need to bring the customer back into customer service.

2A) When did Wendy's eliminate the tables with the old newspapers on the tabletop? I miss those.

2B) When did Superbar go away? Maybe when Wendy's tried to go up market a bit more.

3) When will someone go to market with a down-market Fogo de Chao (Brazillia steakhouse). Since you eat immediately, tables turn much faster than normal. This would be a great opportunity for a volume play to enter the market.

NEW YORK (Associated Press) - Shares of gun maker Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. rose Wednesday after an analyst started coverage with a "Positive" rating, saying the company's revenue will increase as it launches new products and books more orders from the military.

While Smith & Wesson is famous for its revolvers, Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Cheryl Cortez said the company's military and police weapons have helped it take a stronger position in the semi-automatic market. That market offers a lot of potential for the company, she said.

Product lines the company gained from its buyout of Thompson/Center Arms in January 2007, including hunting rifles, will also help improve sales.

"Smith & Wesson has recently launched its bolt-action rifles and has many other products in the pipeline," Cortez said. "New products are expected to gain popularity and wide market acceptance on the back of Smith & Wesson's strong brand name."

She added that profit margins should grow due to the expansion of Smith and Wesson's gun barrel manufacturing facility and the integration of Thomson/Center Arms.

The stock rose 38 cents, or 7.9 percent, to $5.21 in afternoon trading. Smith & Wesson shares have traded around annual lows over the last two months, and took a steep drop in October after the company cut its fiscal-year profit outlook. It cut its forecast again in December.

Cortez said she estimates the Springfield, Mass., company will earn 31 cents per share in the year ending April 30, compared to the company's estimate of 40 cents per share.

She expects a profit of 46 cents per share in fiscal 2009, while analysts polled by Thomson Financial forecast a profit of 61 cents per share that year.

My wife won a iPhone at our company christmas party last week. She loves it and after playing with it i dig it too (and I am not generally an earlier adopter of new toys.) I was thinking about getting one when the new generation comes out. However, then i realized something, they don't make a version without a camera in it. In fact, most manufacturers don't.

Go into any office, manufacturing facility in a competitive industry and you aren't allowed to have cameras in there. I am sure there are lots more places as well. Why haven't cell phone manufacturers come out with high quality phones with all of the gadgets without a camera on it? There is clearly a demand out there and this would be a huge differentiators out there, but there needs to be some reason these companies aren't doing this.

This story is funny on so many levels.

The University of Louisville has filed a lawsuit against Duke
University claiming the schools had agreed to play each other four
times in football between 2002 and 2009 but that Duke canceled the
last three games, costing U of L money and a quality opponent.

According to the suit, which was filed in Franklin Circuit Court, in
2003 Duke backed out of three games — two to be played in Louisville
— scheduled for this year, 2008 and 2009.

The lawsuit did not say why Duke decided to cancel the agreement. A
call to Duke's athletic department was not immediately returned. A
call to U of L's athletic department did not issue an immediate
response.

Louisville requested $150,000 for each of the three games or a
suitable replacement team from the Atlantic Coast Conference, of
which Duke is a member.

But Duke, according to the suit, asked U of L to find its own
replacement, and agreed to pay Louisville only if the program could
not, after a "good faith" effort, find a replacement game.

The suit claims U of L was unable to find a team of "similar stature"
to Duke and is now short an out of conference game for next season
and "was forced" to replace Duke with Indiana State, which is not a
member of the Football Bowl Division, for 2009.

Louisville claims its athletic department has spent countless hours
looking for a replacement for Duke but that no team of similar
stature will agree to play the U of L at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium
two of the three games, as Duke was supposed to do.

The lawsuit is seeking $450,000 for the three football games and any
other relief the courts deem appropriate.

Claims made in filing a lawsuit present only one side of the case.

The Sept. 7, 2002, game between the two schools was played with U of
L winning 40-3.

anyone in the consumer good business knows the importance of black friday, or the day after thanksgiving. This is when most mass retailers start their Christmas promotions. Everyone in the industry guesses how much value key retailers will be offering. Too many value might cut into margins and prevent the retailers from hitting its year-end profit target. Too little discount could prevent the topline sales and result in lower than expected profit and increased year-end inventory.

Over the past few years, Black Friday has become an event in and of itself. Consumers look forward to Black Friday and even make it a tradition to get up at 4 in the morning to go to the store with the best values. As a result, lots of websites first and tv stations second have begun to closely follow the ads, especially for the extreme value. Often, these ads are "leaked" weeks ahead of Black Friday to insure that the stores receive the right amount of pre-Friday hype. In fact, there are multiple websites solely dedicated to covering the ads.

However, just a few weeks ago, Wal-Mart sent a notice to all of these websites asking them to remove their black friday ads and threatening legal action if they don't. Is Wal-mart really that naive to belief that by shutting down a few websites noone will know their black friday ad prices. and even if they do, is this a good thing? Black friday ads are printed up at least a month in advance and no one would be able to react even if they did know competitor prices in advance. Additional wal-mart is constantly monitoring pricing and would do any additional rollback or Save Even More if key product failed to move.

Joe Alleva should be embarassed by the athletic scheduling situation
Saturday night. At 7pm, during the nationally televised Duke-
Florida State football game, the Blue-White scrimmage will be taking
place. Without a doubt, more students will watch an EXHIBITION game
than our football team play a game against the most beatable Florida
State team in years.

The athletic department has paid alot of lip service to the important
of rebuilding our football, including the first-ever football summitt
last year and significant investment in the Yoh Building and other
facilities. However, until it stops forces its students, alumni and
fans to choose between the two sports, our football team will never
have a chance to build an audience and fill Wallace Wade.

Yes, I know the Blue-White game was scheduled montha in advance
before the final football game time was scheduled. However, things
changed and you need to be able to change with them. At any
university serious about having a winning football team, the
basketball exhibition would be moved.

I wish I was an alumni of one of those schools.

a few thoughts:

one of the best finishes every for both the men and women. I saw the female finish occurring about 2 minutes before it happens. Whenever an inexperienced runner starts high-fiving fans, you know bad things are going to happen. That Romanian women is either going to be a star or will never be heard from again. Its probably 50/50
The guy who won was running in his second marathon and the women who should hIave won was running in her first. Can you think of any other high-profile sport or competition wear people who are competing for the first time have a legitimate chance to win. And don't say world series of poker. Most of the online qualifiers had to win very difficult tournaments in order to qualify.
Its quite sad that one of the runner died, however, I think we are lucky only one did. People die in this every year. I honestly thought at least 10 people would die today. Morbid but true. I just got this email this morning. i was a season ticket holder for the 2003-2004 season and have not heard from the Blackhawks since. Obviously, hockey's popularlity is down in this country. The Red Wings just had their first non-sellout in 18 years. However, you really can't say that the Hawks are doing all they can to generate a full house.

wanted to share this with you guys and get some opinions on what I should do next. Clearly, many golf courses forget that they are in the service industry.

Around 6 tonight, I go to my local muni (Winnetka Golf Club) to get a quick nine holes in. First, I go to the pro shop to hit a bucket of balls, I go to the counter and a new employee at first undercharges me. I correct him and pay him the full amount instead. He doesn't believe me until I throw the point to the rate sheet above the cash register.

After I hit a bucket, I go back in and pay for a greens fee. I go up to the register and talk to an assistant pro who is clearly on a personal phone call. I handed him $20 (the twilight greens fee). I ask if I need a receipt and he tells me just to go to the first tee.

At the first tee, as I am approached by a ranger asking me for a receipt. (in the middle of my backswing, noless). I tell him that Jeff, the assistant pro, told me just to tee off. He tells me that I need to go back to the pro shop and get a receipt. I told him no and he can radio into the pro shop if he doesn't believe me. Remember that there is only about an hour of daylight left so I have no interest in wasting any more time.

The assistant pro storms out in a huff to talk to the ranger. I ask them what the problem here is. He tells me "Stop being such a f***ing a*******. If you don't like the way we do things here, play some other F***ing course. The ranger is just trying to do his f*****g job here."

I respond that I paid for greens fee and don't like being this way. Jeff responds "Well, I don't having to be nice to f***ing a*******. As he walks away, I nail a three wood 275 right down the middle.

My questions-- what do I do now? The way I see it I have a few options

1) Never go back to Winnetka Golf Course again.
2) Ignore it and go back as normal like nothing happened.
3) Call the head pro tomorrow morning and tell him my story. (Not sure exactly what he would do about the problem though).
4) Go back and confront Jeff about his behavior.

Also keep in mind while there are other cheap munis in the area, this one has the best twilight rates and is usually deserted after 6pm, which I like since i can often play multiple balls and really work on my game. I would prefer to be able to go back, but don't want to go somewhere which doesn't treat its customers well.

maybe you've seen the latest ads for Old Spice or Secret Deodorants. Money-back guarantee. One would think that if use the product and it doesn't work, P&G (the owner of the two brands) would do the right thing and refund your money. WRONG!!

I recently called their Refund line (1-866-311-0795) to call and ask for a refund after my mother had green marks left on her underarm after using the product for the first. But no, they want the original receipts, the UPC from the original document and enough information to fill a wikipedia site. Who is actually going to have this information? Only someone trying to get something for free. Users of the product who are NOT trying to take advantage of the company, will get nothing back except a bad taste in their money to P&G.

Here's hoping all of the Secret complainers switch to Dove after they can't get their money back. And stop using Tide too.

In the heart of Maryland country, is there a chance this could be a
home game for Duke Lacrosse? I can never remember a past Duke
athletic event where most of the country was rooting for them to win.
(at least since the 1991 UNLV/Duke National FInal). Even Tony and
Wilbon on PTI wanted to see Duke win it all. If Johns Hopkins
wasn't just down the street, then i would be almost certain that it
would be a Duke crowd.

I am now officially the most fashion forward member of my family, passing wifey this weekend. The reason-- our latest purchase, a pair of Nudie jeans.

Never heard of them before? Me neither. There are jeans made with unwashed denim. When you try them on, they are stiff and rigid. As you wear then over time, they wear out to your body. Apparently, they are the rage in Europe. So I will be wearing these jeans for the next few months at home, before they will be ready to leave the house with me.

From a marketing perspective, this is truly brilliant. They are taking costs out of a product, but charging consumers a premium. Kinda reminds you of deodorants, doesn't it?

I like women's basketball. I really do. It is entertaining and since Duke has been pretty good in recent years, I can even have a rooting interest.

Here's what's not so cool and big pet peeve for me-- women's college basketball salaries. Guess how many women's college basketball programs make money. Guess? Remember that almost every top 25 program plays in packed arenas with big games on national television. Done Guess? Did you guess 20, 40? 60?

Here's the answer... TWO.. and barely. Uconn and Tennessee, two powerhouses who sell out 20,000 person arenas on a weekly basis. And Tennessee barely makes any money.

Why is this important and why do I care? Because over the past few weeks, several high profile women's college basketball jobs have opened up and Duke coach Gail Goestenkors has been named as a candidate for many of them. As well she should since she has led Duke to four final fours in the past eight years and this year's team is ranked #1 in the nation.

Coach G currently makes between $250-300K, based on recent estimates, well below the $1MM the UConn and Tennessee coaches make and well below what the likes of Texas, LSU and Michigan will be offering for a top coach. Many Duke women's fans are upset that G will bolt for more $$ and are urging Joe Alleva and Dick Brodhead to give me a big raise.

I will be very disappointed if Duke ponies up more dough to keep Coach G. Women's basketball loses $$ at Duke, despite an outstanding team. Given the dynamics of sports, this is unlikely to change anytime soon. Since there is only really one sport providing $$ for Duke Athletics, it is basically a zero-sum game for non-revenue sports. Every additional dollar you give Coach G will be a dollar taken away from the swimming, lacrosse and wrestling teams. I don't think thats a good trade.

I don't wish Coach G any ill will. If she can make more dough, she should go for it. I am sure that Duke will have people lined up the door to fill G's shoes and coach a perenniel top 10 program.

With S60 on its way out, Friday Night Lights not looking much better Antonella off American Idol and Janice Dickinson at the end of her season, there is NO must-see television for Mark. However, I saw October Road on DVR this morning and finally saw something with promise.

originally, i thought it was going to be another sappy What about Brian, however, this was much better acted and writen for a more intelligent audience. (channelling Aaron Sorkin). With its Grey's lead-in, I hope it does well.

Peeves and Complains

1) Fox Sports' NASCAR covered. Noone on TV or via the internet can you find our when the race actually starts. It is probably a way to drive rating of the prerace shows, however, it might end up working in reverse with lots of fans missing the starts. I definitely wouldn't want to be an advertiser with a big spend on the first C-Break. For a sport that literally revolves around its fans, I would expect more.

2) Brian Grossman. This guy is the slimiest realtor in Lincoln Park. He sends out obnoxious mailers every week and is our development snoop. He is constantly peering in our townhouse to see how it compares to his listings. If you are thinking of moving to Lincoln Park, DO NOT BUY A HOUSE FROM BRIAN GROSSMAN.

3) Franco Turinelli. The Black Widow has struck again; another one of his associates has quit. I believe this is 7 in 2.5 years. At some point you would think that the William Blair partners would stop giving Franco new associates. He is ruining William Blair's reputation in the finance community

things i've been meaning to post about, but haven't

- Wimbledon Pay Equity. This week, Wimbledon announced that the women's and men's champion will make equal money. Women's right advocates rejoiced. This is one of the most ludricrious things I have ever heard of. Sports is entertainment. Compensation should be given based on which of the two sports generates a larger fan base, which gets more sponsors, which gets higher TV rating. In many cases, this might justify HIGHER prize money for the ladies, even though they work less (3 sets versus 5). I wouldn't let the chairman of the All-England Club manage a lemonade stand with these business principles.

- RFID. Somethign I posted on Jonathan Kaplan's blog. As someone who working in consumer packaged good, I feel like I need to comment here. First of all, the experience you describe already exists, and it has nothing to do with RFID. There is a much simpler and efficient way to give customers specific prices-- its called couponing. For a while, every who uses a frequent shopper card gets specific offers (at different values) based on various things in their shopper history (usually purchases of competitive products).

Additionally, some cards will now make custom offers to you when you ENTER the store and scan in your card.

Regarding the example you gave, this would never occur for several reasons-- most notablly whenever you see a discount on a product at your local grocery store, it is funded by the manufacturer, not the grocery store. The manufacturer has no incentive to "raise" prices, since they don't see any of it.

The only really use of RFID in retail (which is mandatory by end of 2009 is to improve inventory management and the amount of product which is actually in-stock.
